The native range of this species is S. China to N. Vietnam. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome.

Vietnamese names: 

Bát giác liên, Pha mỏ (Tày), Độc cước liên, Quỷ cữu, Lá vung Nồi, Đa khao

Synonym: 

Dysosma tonkinense (Gagnep.) M.Hiroe

Family: 

Berberidaceae 

Uses: 

Rhizome treats snakebites, abscesses and boils.
