The native range of this species is Central & S. China, S. Korea, Central & S. Japan, Taiwan. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the temperate biome. It is used as a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.

Lao Cai (Sa Pa: Ban Khoang). The tree grows naturally.
