The native range of this species is Himalaya to S. China and N. Indo-China. It is a shrub or tree and grows primarly in the subtropical biome(s).

In Vietnam: Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Hoa Binh (Mai Chau, Pa Co). The tree grows naturally in primeval or open forest, limestone mountains, at an altitude of 900-1600 m.
