Oncidium sphacelatum

"Oncidium sphacelatum Lindl. a species of orchid ranging from Mexico to Central America, southeastern Venezuela. It is known as Kandyan dancer orchid in Sri Lanka due to its resemblance like Kandyan dancer.

its native range is Mexico to Central America, SE. Venezuela.

English Name:

The Burnt Spot Oncidium.

Description: 

With compressed, oblong pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 3, linear-ligulate, suberect, rigid, acute leaves found in tropical and mountain rain forests occuring and blooms in the spring with a basal, to 180 cm long, lateral to pendulous, short branched, purple mottled panicle arising from the leaf bearing sheaths of a mature pseudobulb that has triangular bracts and carrying showy, weakly fragrant flowers. 

Distribution:

Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico Central, Mexico Gulf, Mexico Northeast, Mexico Southeast, Mexico Southwest, Nicaragua, Venezuela. 


Ecological:

At elevations below 1000 m as a giant sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte and occasional lithophyte.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the spring.

Flower size:

2.5 cm.

Cultivation:

Grow in intermediate to warm conditions with moderate to bright light. Water the plant right before the potting mix starts to dry. Plants should be potted in a well drain medium such as medium fir bark.
