Describtion:

Small tree, often growing in bushes, 2-4m high. The tips of the branches and the petioles of the young leaves are purple-red. Compound leaves are feathery, alternate, 10-25cm long, with 3-9 leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate, 3.5 - 7.5 cm long, 1.5 - 3.5 cm wide, the tip of the leaf is narrow to form a pointed tip, the petiole is 3 - 5 mm long. The upper surface of the leaf blade is glossy, in the light, many essential oil secretion sacs are clearly seen. The edges of the leaves are whole, with many secretory sacs lying close to the edges of the leaves, which look like small serrations. The inflorescence is a cluster of cymbal at the top of the branch, bearing many small, fragrant white flowers. Flower sample 4. Petals 4-6mm long, 1.5mm wide. Stamens 8, four outer stamens 5mm long, four inner stamens 4mm long. The stigma is about 3mm long, the ovary is rough. Fruit globose or oval, 7 - 9mm in diameter, containing 1 - 2 seeds; The pods have many vesicles that secrete essential oils, turning red when ripe. 

Fruit and Flowering:

Flowering season March - April, fruit ripening September - October. 

Distribution: 

Vietnam (Hải Phòng (Cát Bà), Quảng Ninh, Hòa Bình (Mai Châu), Ninh Bình (Tam Điệp), Thanh Hóa (Hà Trung, Đông Sơn, Nga Sơn), Quảng Trị (Làng Khoai)).

Ecology:

The tree grows naturally on limestone mountains.

Chemical and Pharmacology:

Leaves contain 4.4% essential oil (young leaves 5.48%, old leaves 3.24%). The main component of essential oils is menthone (93-99%).

Cultivation

Uses:

Treat rheumatism (Roots). Snake bite (Seed). 

Leaves are used to make duck blood soup
