English Name:

Neowied's Maxillaria (In honor of Prince Maximilian of Weid- Neuwied, German Expedition leader to Brazil in early 1800's).

Description: 

With a clumping, tufting, much branching rhizome giving rise to narrowly ovoid, ridged, green to purplish brown pseudobulbs enveloped by scarious bracts and carrying 2, apical, suberect, needle-like, acute, wiry to leathery leaves that blooms in the spring and summer on a very short, lateral, single flowered inflorescence.

Distribution:

Argentina Northeast, Brazil Northeast, Brazil South, Brazil Southeast. 

Ecological:

In seasonally dry to wet forests at elevations of 200 to 1700 m as a mini-miniature sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the spring and summer.

Flower size:

1.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Plant can be grown in a fine bark medium, full sphagnum moss, or mounted on treefern or cork. Grow in cool to warm conditions with medium amounts of light. Water regularly and keep mix moist but not wet. Plant require semi-dry rest through the winter month.
