Cranichis muscosa

"Cranichis muscosa Sw., the cypress-knee helmet orchid, is a species of terrestrial orchid. It is widespread across most of the West Indies, extending into Central America, southern Mexico, Belize, northern South America, and southern Florida."

its native range is S. Florida to Tropical America.

Cranichis muscosa Sw.

Family: 

Orchidaceae Juss.

Synonym:

Cranichis bradei Schltr.

English Name:

The Moss-Loving Cranichis.

Description: 

The 4-5 leaves grow in a basal rosette and the stem is loosely sheathed by several fluted bracts that get smaller toward the summit. The flowers are non-resupinate and have white sepals and petals. The labellum is white with green flecks. This orchid flowers in January and February, and grows in mossy sinkholes, cypress knees, and rich hammocks. C. mucosa had not been seen in Florida for almost 100 years until several plants were rediscovered in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park.

Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil North, Brazil South, Brazil Southeast, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Florida, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Leeward Is., Mexico Southeast, Panamá, Peru, Puerto Rico, Trinidad-Tobago, Venezuela, Windward Is.

Ecological:

in wet montane forests on damp shady banks at elevations of 200 to 2950 m as a miniature sized, cool to hot growing terrestrial herb occuring.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the fall, winter and early spring.

Flower size:

1.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Plants should be grown in fine fir bark or in sphagnum moss with moderate light and warm temperatures. Plants can also be mounted. Water regularly during the summer. Reduce watering during the winter and water about every two weeks.
