風蘭 (fūran) Japan (Honshu from the Kantō region westwards; Shikoku; Kyushu; and Ryukyu Islands.)

Description: 

With a short, monopodial, complanate stem enveloped basally by conduplicate leaf bases carrying coriaceous, distichous, fleshy, conduplicate, linear-falcate leaves that blooms on a racemose, axillary, to 7 cm long, laxly several flowered inflorescence that appears in early summer through fall with nocturnal, fragrant jasmine to vanilla scented flowers.

Distribution:

China North-Central, China South-Central, China Southeast, Japan, Korea, Nansei-shoto.

Ecological:

As a cool to cold growing epiphyte, found in areas that have shady summers, and because of the deciduous trees that they grow on, almost full sun in the winter.

Flowering times:

Blooms in early summer through fall.

Flower size:

3.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Plants are grown in pots with sphagnum moss or medium bark in cool to intermediate temperatures. Plants can be mounted on cork or treefern slabs. Grow under bright lights. Water regularly, about once every three days. Reduce watering during the winter to about once a week. They require good air circulation.
