Pleione hookeriana

"Pleione hookeriana (Lindl.) Rollisson is found from the eastern Himalayas, Assam, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and southern China. It grow on tree trunks, mossy rocks and cliffs in mixed bamboo and rhododendron scrub at elevation of 1600-3100 meters above sea level."

Description: 

Deciduous species with conical, clustered pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, persistent, plicate, elliptic-lanceolate, acute leaf that tapers gradually to the petiolate base and blooms as the new growths are appearing in the mid-spring and summer on a slender, sheathed, 12 cm long, single flowered inflorescence with tubular, obliquely truncate, obtuse floral bract.

Distribution:

Assam, China South-Central, China Southeast, East Himalaya, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, Vietnam, West Himalaya.

Ecological:

In mixed bamboo and rhodedendron scrub on mossy rocks and trees in deep shade at elevations of 2200 to 4200 m as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte, lithophyte or terrestrial.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the mid-spring and summer.

Flower size:

4.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Plant goes dormant in the fall to late spring. Pot plants in a mix of bark and sphagnum moss, or in 50% peat and 50% perlite. Mix should retain moisture and should be well drained. Plants should be watered constantly during growing season. Stop watering when leaves drop. Plant should be misted lightly and potting media should be kept dried during dormancy starting from fall. Keep plant cool from 16° to 75°F during growing season and cold during dormancy form 50° to 25°F. Grow in diffused light and fertilize at half strength during summer. Keep in a well circulated area.
