Description:
with 4 to 6, in a basal rosette to erect, oblong or oblong-ovate leaves with the uppermost few being sheath-like that blooms in the spring on a 5 to 12.5 cm long, rather dense, pyramidal to oblong in shape, inflorescence with fragrant (foul and mostly nocturnal) flowers.

Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Corse, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Krym, North Caucasus, Poland, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Transcaucasus, Turkey, Ukraine, Yugoslavia.
Ecological:
As a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial found only in calcareous soils in montane beech, pine and fir forests at elevations up to 2000 m.
Flowering times:
Blooms in the spring.
Flower size:
2.0 cm.
Cultivation:
Plants prefer well-drained low-fertility soils and areas with partial shade. This species is cool to intermediate growing. Water regularly. Divide plant when flower fades.
Typus:
The lectotype, i.e. a specimen that was subsequently identified as a name-bearing type, was published in Historia stirpium indegenarum Helvetiae inchoata by HALLER (Hist. Stirp. Helv., 2: 143, t. 30, 1768, Lectotype = "Orchis radicibus subrotundis, petalis galeae lineatis, labello quadrifido integerrimo "). The herbarium document was published on June 14th, 1759 by HALLER collected in Switzerland (14.06.1759, leg. A. V. HALLER, Joux verte above Roche) and by BAUMANN & al. (1989) confirmed.
