Dendrobium moschatum

"Dendrobium moschatum (Buch.-Ham.) Sw. is native to the Himalayas (northern and eastern India, northern Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Assam, Yunnan), and Indochina (Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia). It grows in open forests on tree trunks at elevations around 300 to 900 meters above sea level."

English Name:

The Musky Smelling Dendrobium - Leueang nok khamin - Ueang mawn khai - Ueang champa.

Chinese name:

Shao Chun Shi Hu - 杓唇石斛.

Description: 

With erect, arching or pendulous, terete, dark brown with age stems carrying the leaves in the apical half which are narrowly elliptic to oblong-ovate, leathery, acute leaves which blooms in the late spring and early summer on an axillary, pendulous, to 20 cm long, few to several (5 to 10) flowered inflorescence with musk scented flowers that last about a week arising at or near the apex of a leafless cane. Water and fertilizer should be reduced through the winter months and resumed with the onset of new growth in the spring.

Distribution:

Assam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China South-Central, East Himalaya, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, West Himalaya.

Ecological:

In open forests on tree trunks at elevations around 300 to 900 m as a large sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the late spring and early summer.

Flower size:

9.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Plant requires cool to warm temperatures and medium amounts of light. Plant prefers to dry out between waterings. Grow in a well drain mix of sphagnum moss or medium fir bark. Plant can be mounted.
