"Bulbophyllum purpurascens F.M.Bailey is a species of orchid in the genus Bulbophyllum. Not the most showy of orchids, this orchid bears 10 to 12 flowers on each of its inflorescences. The flowers are pale yellow and are about 1.5 cm long. It is native to Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand."

English Name:

The Purple Bulbophyllum (refers to the leaves).

Description: 
With 1 cm between each has 3 ridged, lenticular to ovate-prismatic, smooth and shiny in youth and angular with age, unifoliate pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, tough and leathery, elliptic, deciduous leaves that blooms in the spring, summer and fall on a slender, erect, bracteate, to 18 cm long, inflorescence which arises from an older pseudobulb carrying an umbel of 10 to 19, close set flowers at the apex and held well above the leaf.

Distribution:

Thailand, Myanmar, the islands of Java, Borneo and Sumatra.

Ecological:

In lowland and lower montane forests on tree trunks and tree branches, often overhanging water, at elevations of 900 to 1700 m as a mini-miniature sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the spring, summer and fall.

Flower size:

1.3 cm.

Cultivation:

Light:  

Shade to Bright; 1500-2500 Footcandles (indirect light,pronounced shadowing).

Temperature:

Intermediate to Warm; 58°F min. to 88°F max.

Watering:

Moist; 3-5 waterings per week (let dry lightly between waterings).
