Bulbophyllum newportii

"Bulbophyllum newportii Rolfe, commonly known as the cupped strand orchid,[2] is a species of epiphytic or lithophytic orchid that is endemic to tropical North Queensland. It has widely spaced, oval or cone-shaped, light green pseudobulbs, a single stiff, dark green egg-shaped leaf and up to eight bell-shaped white, cream-coloured or greenish flowers with a long, narrow yellow labellum. It grows on trees and rocks, usually at moderate to high elevations."

Description: 

With a much branching rhizome with 8 to 1.5 cm between each grooved to ribbed, nearly orbicular to ovoid pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, dark green, narrowly oblong to linear, acute, shortly petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring on a basal, wiry, longer than the leaf, 5 cm long, 1 to 8 flowered inflorescence.

Queensland.

Ecological:

In rain or cloud forest at elevations of 600 to 1200 m as mini-miniature sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte or lithophyte.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the spring.

Flower size:

1.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Light:

Bright; 2500-3500 Footcandles (very bright indirect light).

Temperature:

Warm,Intermediate to Cool;45°F min. to 98°F max.(tolerant of extremes,favoring warm).

Watering:

Moist; 3-5 waterings per week (let dry lightly between waterings).
