Description:

It is a small sized terrestrial or epiphyte orchid with ovoid-conical pseudobulbs, carrying a single, apical, deciduous, inverted-lanceshaped, somewhat pointed leaf. The plant blooms on a basal, 3-5 inches long, single flowered inflorescence enveloped by a green sheath, with a slightly fragrant, color variable flower. Flowers are generally pure white, with the lip strongly marked in blood red.

Distribution:

Assam, East Himalaya, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, West Himalaya.

Ecological:

In cloud forests at elevations of 1700 to 3100 m growing on moss or the smooth trunks of rhododendron trees Flowering times: Blooms in the spring and summer.

Flower size:

12 cm.

Cultivation:

Plant goes dormant in the late fall to early spring. Pot plants in a mix of bark and sphagnum moss, or in 50% peat and 50% perlite. Mix should retain moisture and should be well drained. Plants should be watered constantly during growing season. Watering should begin after plant finishes blooming, since roots start developing after flower withers. Stop watering when leaves drop. Plant should be misted lightly and potting media should be kept dried during dormancy in the fall. Keep plant cool from 16° to 75°F during growing season and cold during dormancy form 50° to 25°F. Grow in diffused light and fertilize at half strength during summer.
