English Name:

Rand's Encyclia (English Orchid Enthusiast)

Description: 

The flowers of Encyclia randiana are star-shaped and the petals are olive-green to red-brown in color. The lip is broad and large and is marked with a rose-magenta blotch with darker veins. Petals, sepals, and lips are ruffled. Large flowers are produced on a simple or branched inflorescence that grows to 24 inches (60 cm). Encyclia randiana var. rondoiensis has large pink flowers with a pink blotch on the lip.

Distribution:

In northern to western Brazil, Peru and Paraguay

Ecological:

In the hot rainforest lowlands at elevations of 15 to 350 m.

Flowering times:

Blooms in the late spring and early summer.

Flower size:

6.5 cm.

Cultivation:

Grow in bright light and high humidity with good air circulation. Allow plants to dry between waterings. These plants do not like to keep their feet wet!  We recommend mounting plants on wood/in baskets or growing in an open, freely-draining bark mix if plants are grown potted.
