Native to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú and Venezuela in upper level cloud forests at elevations of 2500 to 3500 meters as a medium sized, cold growing epiphyte or terrestrial.
*Stig Dalström (National Biodiversity Centre, Thimphu, Bhutan; Lankester Botanical Garden, University of Costa Rica - Associated Researcher) author of the recombination of the species name (from Odontoglossum auropurpureum Rchb. f. to C. auropurpureum, and the great expert on the Oncidiinae, wants to split this species or species complex into four species: C. auropurpureum (the type from Venezuela), C. compactum (from Perú), C. orientale (from Ecuador) and C. triphyllum (from Ecuador and Perú). With this particular specimen I show you, we would be talking about C. orientale Ined.
