Bulbophyllum spongiola J.J.Verm., from section Polymeres, is a pendant growing epiphyte found in the lower montane forest of New Guinea (1600-2000m). Section Polymeres is massive, with 115 known species in New Guinea alone, and it is morphologically diverse as well. This species is characterized by a continuously branching hanging rhizome that is gently recurved toward the new pseudobulb which grows nearly patent. Flowers, with loosely hinged tubular shaped lips, come in several colour forms and are produced all along the rhizome several times during the year lasting 3-4 days.
