Angraecum eichlerianum var. eichlerianum
Angraecum eichlerianum from the rainforests in western/central Africa
Angraecum is a group of tropical orchids that includes ca. 221 species distributed in Sub-Saharan Africa, the western Indian Ocean region, and Sri Lanka. Madagascar is the center of the diversity for the genus with ca. 142 species, of which 90% are endemic.
Angraecum eichlerianum is a warm loving and avid climber and has a stem that reaches 4-5 meters in length. The largest individual I have is now 130 cm tall. The plant climbs up along the trunk with its roots like a vine.
Angraecum eichlerianum is an epiphyte in undisturbed habitats in primary rainforest.
The plant emits attractive perfumes at dusk and is pollinated by a hawkmoth sp. Hawkmoth's lip is as long as the nectar tube to reach the concentrated nectar at the tip.
Flower size > 5 cm
